From the 1990s to the present, newspapers in Indonesia, notably Sunday editions, have regularly featured articles appreciative of Indonesia’s colonial built heritage. Often the work of relatively young reporters, the articles either praised the aesthetics and historical relevance of the buildings and townscapes or highlighted the threats facing them. To most non-Indonesians, notably Europeans and Americans, the relaxed and positive attitude towards these tactile and often prominent reminders of Indonesia’s colonial past is quite a novelty. The sight of Indonesians in mock-colonial outfits exploring this heritage on vintage Dutch bikes provokes sheer astonishment.By describing the changing appreciation of Indonesia’s colonial built heritage and the agents that drove this development, this article analyses how Indonesia and the Netherlands gradually appropriated the built heritage of their colonial past.

The sight of Indonesians clad in their “colonial cut” garments exploring this heritage riding classic Dutch bicycles always surprises them.This article describes the changing appreciation of Indonesian colonial architectural heritage and the agents that drove this movement, and discusses how Indonesia and the Netherlands gradually appropriated the architectural heritage of their colonial past.

The impact of the high incidence of SARS-CoV-2 and the measures taken has been strongly felt on the level of sales and employment in the sector. According to the National Institute of Statistics’ retail trade indices, the average drop in sales at constant prices in the sector between January and September was 8.5 percent.
All this has an impact on a sector with a high incidence of self-employed and micro-SMEs and with an essential economic and social function. Moreover, the closure of commercial establishments not only has an impact on the income and employment of the sector itself, but also has a knock-on effect on other productive sectors, which are the suppliers of its products.
The situation described above and the evolution of the pandemic make it necessary to extend the application of some of the aids approved in previous months, as well as to approve new measures aimed at reinforcing economic activity and supporting companies and the self-employed.
In view of the economic and social impacts that the health crisis is generating, and since the first declaration of the state of alarm by Royal Decree 463/2020, of March 14, the Government has adopted various measures in support of the most affected sectors. Some of the most relevant have been the Temporary Employment Regulation Files (ERTE), the legislative moratorium on mortgage debts and the line of guarantees from the ICO. The measures adopted so far have proven to be effective tools to maintain jobs and contain job destruction.
